You're into Developing Open Source but no Linux Desktop?
Submitted by rimian on Wed, 12/06/2006 - 12:02You like the idea of Open Source Software and you've put together a couple of websites with your favoutire Content Management System. Maybe you are familiar with PHP and your hosting company runs a Linux cluster.
So why aren't you running a Linux Desktop next to your XP machine?
If you're unfamiliar with the Linux Operating System then it's not time to jump ship to Linux and say good bye to your Windows machine for good. The Linux desktop is not mature enough for everyone and probably won't be for a while.
Build your own LAMP Server
Submitted by rimian on Wed, 11/08/2006 - 15:18I used to have a Gentoo staging server that ran all my websites that were in production. Gentoo is a fantastic distro and I'd recommend installing it at least once. You should also take a look at Gentoo's documentation for info on all sorts of linux stuff like CVS, Grep and System Admin.
Gentoo is about freedom of choice. But the cost is you really need to invest some serious learning time into it. This is very rewarding but if you're not learning it constantly you may forget some things.
